As a Math teacher candidate, I’ve noticed that students often forget what they’ve learned, especially after long breaks like summer or Christmas. This was something I experienced firsthand during my secondary and post-secondary education, which led me to seek solutions. Through research and my Math Curriculum and Teaching Methods course, I discovered the critical difference between conceptual and procedural understanding. Conversations with experts and my findings confirmed that prioritizing conceptual understanding before teaching procedural methods significantly improves retention. To address this, I’ve created a website that serves as a portfolio of research and resources to support conceptual learning in Math classrooms, making it easy for teachers to implement and share with colleagues.
